“Honesty and empathy do not flourish in the expectation of perfection.”
-- Meg Bowles
For the Kids
A child’s voice may be silenced at home, only valued if insulting others among friends, or considered noise by the teacher down the hall. How do we hear their voice, the one deep inside that yearns to belong, to be seen, to be understood?
Storytelling is a way for kids to be who they are, to express what matters most them, to identify the words that give them power, agency and meaning. Youth deserve to be understood, respected and celebrated for who they are within educational spaces. Even with our own good intentions, we can unknowingly shut down or hurt those that we work with and educate. Equip yourself with tools and resources you can apply in the classroom and in your globalized neighbourhood.
“If history were taught in form of stories,
it would never be forgotten.”
-- Rudyard Kipling
For the Teachers
Teachers can be weighed down by administrative protocols, confused by ever changing policies and can feel alone as they navigate their love of teaching and the weight of responsibilities. Teachers are striving for the tools and abilities to not only understand their students but to be understood in return.
How do teachers take their passion projects and inspire a divided classroom? How do teachers feel supported and connected to other educators? Through story, both the teacher and the student break down the invisible barriers, inviting greater understanding and empathy while also transforming the traditional ideas of learning.
The vulnerability of sharing your own story will break down the barriers you’ve seen, transforming your classroom into creative and hospitable spaces. Understanding how to connect with and educate students can be a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be.
“Perhaps all the first stories were cautionary tales that helped save lives, and that’s why we’re so hardwired to want, crave, and treasure them.”
-- The Moth, How To Tell A Story
